Our environment is constantly attacking us through chemical exposure in our air, water, food, personal hygiene products, and household cleaning supplies. Today we want to focus on cleaning up our household supplies to make that environment as safe as it possibly can be. Remember you can’t be a clean fish in a dirty bowl so we need to limit our exposure as much as we can.
I recommend using only cleaning products that are low in solvents, fragrances, and other chemicals. Common cleaners have many substances that are harmful to human health. The following ingredients should be avoided:
– Chlorinated phenols (toilet bowl cleaners)
– Diethylene glycol (window cleaners)
– Phenols (disinfectants)
– Nonylphenol ethoxylate (in laundry detergents and all-purpose cleaners)
– Petroleum solvents (floor cleaners)
You can easily make your own cleaner with water, white vinegar, and some essential oils (lavender, rosemary/rose oil). Download the Healthy Living App and use their website to look up companies or use the scanning function on the app to pick your products at the store. I find that most of the products out there are not safe for regular use.
The next thing to think about is the furnishings in your house. Avoid spraying them with “stain resistant” chemicals. Look to buy leather, 100% organic cotton and linen blends, and wood. Another place to be careful is the sheets on your bed, make sure they are organic cotton as well. These same things apply to the clothing you wear each day, look for natural fibers like cotton, wool, hemp, or silk. Be weary of clothing treated with flame retardant chemicals.
These are some simple ideas you can use to start to make your environment less toxic to you and your family.
