NET is a technique that some chiropractors use in combination with the chiropractic adjustment to stimulate the body to make measurable physiological changes and restore proper function to joints of the body. These changes allow our nerves to optimally transfer messages to and from the brain and allow our muscles to respond efficiently to those messages. When the body is working well, organ systems can do their jobs. The body can move as needed and the brain can process the world. For these adjustments to ‘hold,’ the body must be in balance chemically, mentally, and structurally.
Sometimes when the body is not working as it should, emotional trauma could be the cause of abnormal function of the muscles, nerves, and joints. Emotions are caused by chemical reactions the body produces when stressed. The response can range from headaches and anxiety to constipation/diarrhea, joint/muscle pain, and chronic illness like heart disease. People tend to not express their emotions very well at times and hold them inside which can cause long term chronic problems, create undesired habits, or characteristics they would like to change but cannot. The longer these symptoms go on, the more they can affect the body’s ability to function. If this happens, it can cause an organ or group of organs to become dysfunctional, leading to a disease.
Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET) was designed to help an individual recognize the emotional trauma associated with the physical changes and symptoms that developed as a response. These body adaptations are called a Neuro Emotional Complex (NEC). Without addressing the emotional trauma, the patient may have a harder time healing.
The goal of a chiropractic NET practitioner is to find misalignment of the spine and/or disruptions to the acupuncture meridian system flow of energy (different from acupuncture) and reverse the bodies adaptations (NEC.) The chiropractic NET practitioner will help the patient identify and acknowledge the emotional trauma associated with the misaligned joint by asking questions as they perform the chiropractic treatment. The expressed emotion will allow the body to respond more favorably to chiropractic treatment. The patient does not necessarily need to answer these questions aloud but needs to be receptive and give intentional thought.
It is not “talk” therapy, and a patient would be referred to a counselor and / or psychologist if they would like to get further insight into these emotions.
