Chiro Care for Concussions

September 21, 2020

When someone gets a concussion during a football game, you might hear the announcer say they got their “bell rung”, but what really happens is they receive a brain injury. Helmet to helmet contact is the typical way we think of it happening during a game, but in reality, concussions can happen in many ways, car accidents being a good example.

Any situation where the brain suddenly changes direction can cause a concussion, even if there is no direct contact to the head. The brain will contact the skull inside the head, rebound and then hit the other side of the skull. The brain has about the same consistency as Jell-O, so sudden, violent movements create an elongation of the brain, creating the injury.

A common misconception is that a person loses consciousness when they get a concussion, but the brain can be injured while the person is fully awake.

Typically, the patient feels “out of sorts”, they may have difficulty with their surroundings, they may experience visual “stars” or things may sound “hollow”. Frequent headaches and fatigue are common. People around them often notice the changes the most.

Everyone recovers from a concussion differently, from a few days to many weeks. During this time, the brain must completely rest. No texting, screen time or reading. It’s important to “do nothing” for several days, then slowly increase activities. The patient must be absolutely symptom-free for the brain to be fully healed, and it’s critical to avoid getting a second concussion during this time.

At Opp Chiropractic, we can help patients recover from the symptoms of concussion. Headaches and neck pain respond very well to spinal adjustments. Rehab activities may be a part of the treatment plan as well. We also offer acupuncture that has the benefit of reducing muscle spasms, so blood flow will improve to the brain, speeding healing. Acupuncture points are chosen that will relieve headaches, insomnia, fatigue, cognitive issues, changes to hearing, taste and smell, dizziness and nausea.

If either you or a loved one is experiencing concussion symptoms, we would love to help. Please give us a call today to schedule an appointment for a thorough consultation and exam.
