Give Your Thyroid Some Help!

January 28, 2021

Your thyroid gland produces hormones that help in regulation of metabolism, body temperature, and growth and development of the body. The most common thyroid problems include hypothyroidism (not producing enough thyroid hormone) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Early warning signs of thyroid problems include, but are not limited to, fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, puffy face, hoarseness, and muscle weakness.

A major way in which you can help your thyroid function at its best is a healthy diet, and trying to include certain foods over others. Some foods that might be a good idea to add into your diet if you are concerned about your thyroid health would be whole eggs, oysters, leafy greens, seeds, lentils, beans, tuna, seaweed, Brazil nuts, and berries. These foods contain key nutrients that your thyroid needs to perform optimally.

· Eggs are a super- food that store a ton of nutrients within the yolk, including selenium and iodine, both of which are important for thyroid function.

· Oysters are high in zinc, which help regulate the immune system and your thyroid, and tuna is high in selenium.

· Seeds, lentils, and beans contain amino acids such as tyrosine, B- complex vitamins, minerals such as selenium, and antioxidants- all of which support the thyroid.

· Brazil nuts are one of the most potent forms of selenium.

· Leafy greens and berries help to decrease inflammation within the body, and also contain powerful antioxidants and carotenoids that help lower free radical damage.

· Roasted seaweed is rich in iodine which can help support your thyroid.

One thing to remember is that you do not want to overdo it on any of these foods, or any certain foods in general. These foods may help to increase thyroid function, however if eaten in excessive amounts may also hinder function. If you have any questions, or want more information on how to support your thyroid, feel free to contact the office to talk with one of the Doctors!
