How does massage benefit patients with arthritis?
There are 2 kinds of arthritis. One is rheumatoid, which is caused by your body attacking the joints and is a disease. The other is osteo, and it is more of a degenerative condition caused by aging. Both types of arthritis benefit from massage.
A concern I’ve received from clients is the fear factor. They are afraid to get a massage because the last time they got one they were extremely sore afterward. This doesn’t have to be the case! If you are concerned, make sure to voice your worry to the massage therapist. I would recommend lighter pressure and not working directly on the inflamed joint, but working around the surrounding area to help so that massage can help you.
There are 5 reasons why massage helps with rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.
1- It helps relieve pain. Why does it relieve pain? The tissue that is inflamed gets loosened and relaxed.
2-Circulation and blood flow are increased.
3-Swelling is reduced.
4-Mobility in improved.
5-Sleep is improved due to increased circulation and mobility and swelling is decreased.
With these in mind, don’t be afraid to try a massage. Give us a call and schedule one today!
