Self Care During the Winter

February 10, 2020

Self-care is defined as the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health. This is important because it produces positive feelings which improves confidence, self-esteem and your over-all health. The following are ways you can improve self-care.

Hydration: stay hydrated – not only on the outside, but also on the inside. Drink at least 8 cups of water per day and remember to drink more with intense exercise. It is important to keep a water bottle nearby. Among many other benefits, proper hydration delivers nutrients to the cells, keeps organs functioning properly, improves cognition and sleep!

Massage & Chiropractic Care: make sure to get regular massages and chiropractic care to improve the body’s ability to function and move. Movement, such as exercise, has been proven to help your body and mind feel better by releasing endorphins.

Slow down: try not to rush through life – give yourself time in all things. Allowing yourself extra time to accomplish your daily tasks will decrease stress levels. Adding time to enjoy a hot bath before bed will help relax your muscles – allowing for a deeper, more restful sleep.

Forgiveness: forgive yourself – you are only human. Stop comparing yourself to others and allow yourself to say ‘no’ to others. Only say ‘yes’ to things that you have time for and are passionate about. Forgiveness reduces anger, resentment, stress, sleep issues and even physical problems.

Goals: set realistic (SMART) goals. Remember to reward yourself for reaching certain milestones in your progress, even if they are small. Goal setting gives us a clear set of actions to follow and allows us to monitor and measure our progress.

Positivity: life is more enjoyable when we can stay positive. Keep a journal by your bed and write in it first thing in the morning or before you go to bed. This will help you to express what’s been negative and focus on the positives.

Hydration, regular massage and chiropractic care, slowing down, forgiveness, setting goals and positivity are just a few ways you can improve your health by addressing your self-care. If you are unsure where to start, please contact Opp Family Chiropractic!
