What I Am Thankful For – Dr. Brian

November 1, 2020

This year has been one for the history books. Finding silver linings in things has been more difficult due to what has transpired around us. This is why it is even more important to fill your life with friends, family, and positive things that fill your heart.

Finding thankfulness this year may be a challenge for people, but it is necessary. Challenges help us get out of our comfort zone and allow us to rise to the occasion presented to us. Choice in how we respond to this challenge is always up to you. What are you thankful for?

The things I am most thankful for are the relationships that I made during this time. As the world told us to stay away from each other (remember that 2 weeks to flatten the curve?), it caused some of us to be drawn toward each other. Social interaction has long been shown to be part of a healthy lifestyle. In fact, if you want to live to be 100, it is at the top of the list. You may have even heard that you are the sum of the 4 people you hang out with the most. I am thankful for these relationships as they helped to keep my hopes up for this world.

This year also helped me know that I would rather learn in person rather than on-line. When someone is on stage you get the full interaction of a presenter. I acknowledge technology is a great thing, but human interaction with an audience is a special thing that cannot be replaced by a zoom call. I was able to learn in person at a small seminar during the summer and it was wonderful to speak to others who wanted to learn and grow in their chosen profession.

I am thankful for my family. The last 6 months helped to show acceptance of each other’s views on the world. One of my “blind spots” is interrupting people and not fully listening. I have learned to listen better, really listen, and not form an opinion on other people’s words. I know that winning an argument carries little benefit other than to stroke my own ego. Being humble can get you far in this life, don’t forget that.

Lastly, religion and church is a huge part of my life. When they closed them and went on-line, it was difficult. Once again, hearing the music, listening to the message, and being around other Christians is invaluable. Doing all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13) is my favorite verse. It hangs in my treatment room so I can see it and read it every day. I believe we all need to have a belief in a higher power that can guide us, give us purpose, and fill us with hope. When one does not have this we become lost, using other things to fill the hole that is inside us. I am thankful that my beautiful wife has faith so strong that it inspires me to reach new heights in my own faith.

My hope this year for all of you is that you find what is good in this world, stronger relationships, and a purpose in this life that brings joy and happiness to this world. Remember, You change your life by changing your heart – Max Lucado.
